Oh George, will you marry me? You always serve the freshest, prime sushi. You always are smiling and ready to serve. You are online and eager to please. You know I hate wasabi and don't muck up my plate with it. You know I like a little extra crunch on my spicy tuna roll. You know what it means to appreciate your customer and give great presentation. You speak english fabulously and you are THE sushi Zen in your Den. Please don't ever leave me, I would be devastated.

Best sushi....E V E R! Owner George is a master at his craft, with wife by his side they are welcoming, hospitable and genuine. The place is almost always full, service is great, and the sushi is fresh and amazing. Poor, hidden location make this a well kept secret. Sushi Den is a gem in Oakland County worth the trip and you will not be disappointed.

I don't have too much to say about this place other than it is great sushi! It's fresh, moist, and full of flavor. No dried out bland fish here. Also the staff all speak very good English which is a plus for me. Both their takeout and dine-in service is top notch.

A hidden gem in Walled Lake. The location is a little inconspicuous in the corner of the plaza at Maple and Pontiac Trail but worth the effort. They have excellent cuisine, much like I have had in Japan during countless trips there. The drive is much shorter than the 13 hour flight to Tokyo! I have been to Sushi Den a few times now and have always had a good meal. Happy that they are open on Sundays! The Norimaki sushi are great, as is the Tempura Udon.

Fantastic sushi. I have eaten in and had carry out multiple times, always made perfectly. The selection of their sushi menu is great, and it is always fresh. The ambiance doesn't scream luxury, but I'm there for the food not decor! A must try if you're in the area!
(5)Jill H.
Sushi definitely deserves a 5 star rating but don't come here if you're looking for ambience. It has more of a coney island feel to it than an excellent sushi place. We tried several rolls including the california, spicy salmon, spicy crunchy tuna, potato, and avocado roll, all very good and fresh. We also tried a curry rice dish which was great, it was nice to have a cooked dish option to satisfy the taste buds of an 11 month old. Will definitely return!

I spent $53.00 on carryout there last night to find a hair in the sushi when I got home. I live too far away to address it but will never go to this place again or recommend. Very disappointed.

Excellent food at wallet-friendly prices, in a relaxed, kinda homey atmosphere. The Chicken Katsu is my favorite, and at just $8 is an incredibly tasty bargain for so big a portion! The sushi here is top notch as well, and the service is always friendly and attentive. A hidden gem!
(5)Emily T.
Foods are really toooo salty, and the waiter would not serve you water until you tell them even they see our tea cups are empty. And you need to wait 1 hr to eat your dinner, they spend 1 hr to make the sushi roll and bento box. This place sucks, will never come back again. Don't recommend to anyone!!!!
(1)Maxwell H.
Love it. Food is spot on. Definitely similar to places in Japan.
(5)Carly E.
This is my favorite sushi place! I am not a huge fan of fish so I usually only get california rolls but everyone I've ever brought here has always loved whatever they ordered. It is quite inexpensive and relatively quick. I have a favorite waitress I try to get every time because she's hilarious. Would highly recommend to anyone!

I've had a hankering for some nice sushi and as a frequent visitor to the area, happy I stumbled upon this establishment. When my yearning peaks again for such fare, I shall be sure to consider this place if not, just bite the bullet and return. I had noodles with tempura and green onions and enjoyed it. The sushi was fresh and tasteful. I'll branch out a bit from the yellow tail and risk being more adventurous in a fresh water locked land. Located a bit off the beaten path, but worth the trip. Nice help staff, and other than the occasional fly, it's pretty clean. Given the choice, I'd likely go back when the sushi hankering returns, without searching for another locale. But then, I feel the need for some nice fried rice! If the rice is nice the rest is best.

Again last night, my family had sushi take out. Authentic, Japanese style sushi. Not Chinese or Korean. Reminds me of the small, family run places in Japan, in the neighborhood where I lived in Ibaraki ken, Japan. Bravo!! gambate kudos sai!!
(5)Katalina G.
Not a sushi fan but I love the shrimp tempura! Shrimp are fresh and the chef is a genuine nice guy. I pick up carry out several times a month from here.
(5)Len S.
Hidden gem in unexpected area. Not super cheap, but better value than many other popular places.
(4)Caryn D.
Don't ever order carry out on-line! I ordered at 6:30. It was supposed to be ready at 6:50. At 7:00, the order hadn't even been started and I was told it would take another 15 minutes!! The sushi is good but the service is very slow and carry out is a nightmare!

This is a small, family run, sushi place tucked away in a large strip mall in the middle of the city of Walled Lake. Believe it or not, but this is a local place or a destination place. You can't see this place from the road. It's sandwiched between the former Farmer Jack's and Blockbuster stores. It's a small place, with 10-12 tables and a sushi bar with 5-6 seats. The menu is dominated by sushi and sashimi options, but they also have a page of entrees, mostly noodles and tempura. But we go for the sushi, or more specifically the rolls. There are plenty of options and the food has always been good. We like the fresh water eel and Spicey tuna rolls. Typically there is the chef and one person working the tables, so if it gets busy, things can back up, and sometimes they also get unattentive on refreshing water or tea. But they are friendly and helpful to people struggling what to order.

Probably the best Japanese restaurant in Michigan. Compared with Sharaku, it is much more affordable. All the chefs are Japanese. They started serving beer and shochu.
(5)C B.
Great sushi, really nice people. Just don't try to dine in! You'll be ignored while the carryout orders are filled. If you're going to eat here - order carryout, and add 10 minutes to the wait time if it's dinner time.
(2)Joe B.
My wife and I come here often, usually for takeout sushi. I love the rainbow and philly rolls and my wife loves the spicy salmon crunch. She also loves the seaweed salad. Sushi is always very fresh and delicious!
(5)Steven S.
Their soba and sushi alike are delicious. As an appetizer, I would definitely recommend the gyoza. Definitely deserving of five stars.
(5)Raphael C.
Went there yesterday for dinner time. Not many people in the restaurant.. Most people do take out. I ordered Shrimp Tempura for appetizer and Tonkatsu Ramen. Shrimp tempura is good. I had high expectation for Tonkatsu Ramen since I had the best one in Toronto not long ago. This place doesn't have the best ramen but it still tastes alright. I still miss the one in Toronto so badly. I would come back Next time and try the sushi. Overall, Friendly waitress and quiet place to eat.
(4)Dave G.
Awesome little sushi shop. Japanese owned with Japanese clientele. Lunch entrees are $7-8 complete with miso, rice and traditional sides. Many options including ramen, udon and soba. I got take-out and my order was placed online with perfect accuracy. Next time i will eat there and try the special: ramen and a crutch salmon roll for only $8!
(5)Jon W.
Hands down best sushi in Michigan! Spicy Tuna crunch is terrific! Chef is very professional and traditional!
(5)Greg Z.
The sushi is very delicious, and well prepared. My only complaint is the take out soy sauce cups (not big enough to dip sushi into). The price is also very affordable for the quality of the sushi. I would recommend to any sushi lover out there.
(5)Bryan S.
Excellent sushi and reasonable prices. Horrendous service if you dine in. Inattentive waiters. Long wait for food while to-go orders are made. Get the food to go and you'll be happy. Ask for extra ginger and wasabi. They are a little stingy with both.

A friend and I decided to try this place last minute, while we were looking for a place to eat on Yelp. It's a little difficult to find, tucked into the back of a strip mall, especially since the sign at the road says 'Sushi To Go' and not Sushi Den. When we got there I was a little skeptical, but when we walked in there were two tables occupied and both of them had Asian-looking people (not sure if they were Japanese or not). Either way, that immediately put me at ease. We sat down and were served tea. I decided to order a pork Katsu from the appetizers and 2 rolls of sushi. The sushi was very nice, the rolls were a little small, but not bad. The ingredients were fresh and the crunch in the roll was the crunchiest I've ever had. The Katsu was good too. The pork was a little tough but the panko coating was thin and fluffy and delicious. I think this is going to become a regular weekday lunch.

To start off, service was excellent. Friendly staff of ladies who constantly kept our table of 8 refilled on tea and water. We ordered katsu, shrimp tempura, Edamame, soft shell crab for appetizers and then 3 spider rolls, 1 cucumber/avocado roll, 1 007, 1 spicy tuna crunch, 1 spicy salmon crunch, 1 yellowtail/scallion, 1 egg, 3 tako, 2 salmon nigiri, 1 dragon roll, 1 ocean roll and a bowl of the soba noodles with tofu and kelp. Dessert we let the kiddies have red bean and green tea ice cream. So good. Prices were pretty reasonable. Food was yummy. Our group was kinda loud but happy. :) We will be back to try other non sushi items. Oh btw...no changing table in bathroom. :(
(5)Todd M.
This is our favorite Sushi place in the area. They are very busy at times. The food is great and the customer service is really friendly.
(5)Miss M.
Ordered Sushi. VERY Good! My favorite was the Spicy California roll. Will for sure order again. Also tried the rainbow roll...really good. I recommend ordering some spicy sauce too, only .50 extra. Great with all the sushi. Very nice people too... and the online ordering was very convenient and fast! If you are in wixom/walled lake area, check them out. You will not be disappointed.
(5)Shaun G.
Hands down the best sushi bar in Walled Lake, let alone the surrounding 10 miles. Great prices, always fresh. Staff is always extremely friendly. Love this place. Truly a hidden gem if you're craving great sushi.

When I came in I noticed the Lunch specials... various Soup/Noodle bowls w/ Spicy Shrimp Roll. I've been to Sushi Den about 2-3 times a month since last Christmas, except for last month. I walked in and asked about the Lunch special and asked if I could substitute the spicy Shrimp Roll for an Avocado Roll. I did not think it would be an issue - in my mind it would be cheaper. However George the owner/chef of Sushi Den said "it's a special, no substitutions." I told the guy, Ah ok, well I am allergic to Shellfish and thought there would not be any issue with getting an Avocado roll instead. So the waitress stood there about 5 inches from the table staring and waiting for me as I looked over the menu. Her staring and waiting like that was annoying. I asked her to give me a minute to look at the menu please without her hovering over me. The menu had many changes to it since I had visited back in September. Many items had higher prices from 50cent to $1 more. Normally i do not mind paying more for something if its a menu item I love to eat. I had my heart set on the Tonkatsu Udon. But It was no longer on the menu... only Tonkatsu Ramen - I don't mind Ramen, except its very common now. Udon is much heartier and tastier to me. I called the waitress over and asked if they still offered the Tonkatsu Udon. She stared at me like a Deer caught in my headlights. I asked again... She said sorry, no Udon. I asked if they could substitute the Udon for the Ramen? Again George the owner/chef piped in that there is "no substitutions." I cannot fathom WTF is the deal. They normally never had issue with making a dish a little but different in the past. I have had many times substituted Soba or Udon from Ramen for other Soup Bowls. This was maddening for me. I was not asking for anything major. Finally I looked at the waitress and at George and said Ya know what, I'm going to go somewhere else. This should not be this much trouble. Really pissed me off at the changes. I will find somewhere else to visit when I have the craving for some good Udon. For now Sushi Den is off my Top 10 list. Maybe I'll revisit next month, but after today's attempt I almost have no desire to come back.

A good option for sushi. The staff is friendly, and the restaurant itself unassuming and small. The restaurant gets a lot of carry out business, so if you go at a high demand time (for example, 5 pm on a Saturday), you may wait awhile for your rolls. We did that today and waited about 25-30 minutes from the time we ordered before we got to eat. I like their cucumber/avocado roll, as well as anything with salmon. Not the best I've had, but still good, and DEFINITELY better sushi than the next nearest place you can get it, which is Casey's, across the street.
(3)Elizabeth B.
one of the best inexpensive sushi places i've been to. tempura udon was very good (one of my fav dishes anyway) and inexpensive al a carte rolls (the yellow tail/onion and cucumber rolls are my usual go to rolls). they used to have nabiyaki udon which i really miss but i guess the health department had a problem with cracking an egg into the steaming hot metal bowl and letting it cook at the table, get over it health department, I've been eating raw cookie dough and raw brownie batter my whole life without a problem. my dad isn't much of a sushi person but the chicken teriyaki keeps him happy here. the owner george is a very nice guy and the waitresses are usually all about prompt refills on your drinks.

I found this place by doing a quick yelp search for the closest ramen shop to my location. It had the best reviews and was the closest so I thought, why not? I went in with my bf and we had sushi together while I also had a bowl of ramen. The ramen serving was huge! I'm a small person and I was able to get 3 meals out of the single bowl! I recently moved from L.A. and the ramen at this shop is VERY similar to my favorite places back in my old town. Very pleased. It was a little crowded due to rush hour. The sushi was very decently priced. I ordered some gyoza to-go. I was a little disappointed with those, as I'm used to fried gyoza and not pan seared. Apart from that, everything I ordered was amazing. For the quality and price, I'm definitely making this my regular sushi and ramen shop to go to!

Changed my opinion about this place. George, the chef/Owner, very very friendly and will go out of his way to make you a satisfied customer. Very hospitable. He takes pride in his dishes which is very obvious. Super sweet. Just give him time to prepare your dish and try to be in a hurry so you can enjoy your sushi. Ive tried other sushi places around, The yummy house etc...., Still, this is by far, the best sushi in the area. Its fresh, and Ive never had a bad dish there. Gotta try the Tempura California Roll.... His crab salad is the best Ive ever had. Excellent Excellent Excellent

I am pretty sure that I can say that, between my wife and I, we have had almost every item on the menu. This place is exceptionially good for its location. The sushi is always excellent and fresh. How do they do it? Very limited menu which reminds me of Ajishin. I feel that the sushi here is better than Ajishin. The Soba is the best I have ever had. Curry is good too. We eat here at leat once a week. They are always happy to see us, always have a table at lunch (unlike Ajishin), and have a constant supply of fresh sushi. Very little downside here. It is a little hard to find, closed mondays, mess up about 1 in 6 of our sushi orders (always correct it quickly, check your carry-out), and are a little cheap on the wasabe. Super frreindly and great english. If you love sushi, live any where near here, and have not eaten here yet, eat here soon. See you there!

A tiny place, tucked back in the corner of a somewhat decrepit strip mall but the restaurant itself is clean and cosy. The sushi menu is somewhat limited compared to other places, but it's fresh and excellently prepared, some of the best I've had. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not a fan of maki (rolls), so my judgement is based primarily on the nigiri. Both the shoyu and tonkatsu ramen are excellent, though I'd prefer a fattier piece of pork than the rather dry piece of loin that comes with the ramen. I was a little disappointed with the teriyaki, finding the chicken to be dry, though I've found that to be a common problem. In truth I always end up ordering sushi now, to the extent that I'll even order a few pieces to have while waiting for my take-out ramen order, it really is excellent.
(4)Karyn W.
Thanks to the great reviews of fellow Yelpers, I decided to give this place a try. The sushi was excellent and it reasonably priced. I will definitely be going back for more!
(5)Alex K.
Best Sushi in town so far. The quality and the price! No one can beat either. The location is not very convenient and the mall is sort of sad looking... But give it a try! You will live it.
(5)Kim S.
My teen is a sushi junkie. Have been to numerous places but this is by far the best. Cleanest restaurant I have ever seen! Food is fresh and reasonably priced.
(5)Mike C.
As a sushi fanatic, I've frequented around 20 of the sushi restaurants within an hour of walled lake. Sushi Den is definitely one of the best. Expect fresh sushi, and reasonable prices. Excellent lunch specials, traditional Japanese food, and the Sushi is top. Getting really sick of americanized sushi joints where every roll is covered in mayo, and blow torched, this is a fresh alternative. Sushi Den has all the standard issue sushi rolls plus it caters to nice list of specialty rolls. Its also notable that the specialty rolls are not that much. Dragon roll is around 6 bucks. Thats unheard of, drive to west Bloomfield and you'll easily pay double, for far less. Highly recommend Spicy Yellowtail Crunch!. It is probably one of THEE best rolls. Panko flakes, yellow tail, spicy sauce and green onions. Take it from me, I've tried em all, and Sushi Den is one of the best! Go anywhere else, and beware of rolls that fall part, have too much rice, not enough fish etc.. Sushi Den is a reliably good sushi ready for dine-in or take out.
(5)Clayton C.
Excellent Japanese food at extremely reasonable prices. And it passes the Clay C. ethnic food litmus test - "the people who the food is supposed to be for have to be in there for me to consider it legit." And legit it is. That vast majority of their clientle are Japanese and that works for me. After all, if I walk into a soul food place and it's all white people, I go "oh, hell no." If I walk into an Italian place and it's all people who look like they wouldn't know spaghetti carbonara from ketchup and egg noodles I go "oh, hell no." And if I walk into an Asian place and there are no Asians in there I go "oh, hell no." But when I walked into Sushi Denn I said "oh, hell yes." Holler. The food is really good. The sushi is fresh and not over-priced. I highly recommend the beef teriyaki dish. Except as for the "butter soy sauce" instead of teriyaki sauce. You won't be disappointed if you love beef. And it only costs 9 bucks. Holler. The place is a litte hard to find. It's in a mostly abandoned strip mall near Maple and Pontiac Trail. But once you find it, you'll be happy you did. Holler. Tell them Clay-C san said "holler"

I've known George since I was a little girl. He has been a part of the Matsumoto family since we met him in his days at Akasaka. It's difficult to find good sushi and Japanese food that is owned and operated by Nihon Jin so we make the trip to see George. He always treated us like family and was good friends with my Uncle John. George is not only makes the best sushi, but he is a great person. Thank you for all you've done for the Matsumoto's and being Uncle John's friend.
